Westhill Do-Si-Do My Darla helps Soldiers at West Point

Warriors In Transition Pet Therapy 

West Hill Do Si Do My Darla has taken her therapy work to West Point, joining the "Warriors in Transition Pet Therapy Program". 

Warriors In Transition Pet Therapy,  is a new program that helps soldiers who return from overseas with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), anxiety, depression and other emotional disorders brought about by battle or separation from family and loved ones. These invisible injuries are so severe that the soldiers are unable to function as productive members of civilian life or as  soldiers  back on active duty. It is the goal of the program to help the soldiers transition back into civilian life or back to active duty.

It is Darla's job to get the soldiers to learn how to relax without fear or anxiety. Our first visit was on Tuesday, August, 2.  We were honored to be the first therapy team that was asked to visit the soldiers. Through touch, petting, giving treats, asking for tricks the soldiers did relax. They were soon laughing and began sharing stories of their own families and pets.  We stayed over an hour.  Darla fell asleep at the soldiers' feet on their boots.    I guess it's hard work to be charming!

The feedback from the Occupational Therapist, who started the program was all very positive.  This was a very special day for me as well. I'll always remember it.I feel privileged to be owned by such a wonderful dog.
